We are what we breathe
We are what we breathe
It might be a cliché but it is true!
Efficient units within one’s home can make or break the overall air quality and its consequences. We’ve previously explained the importance of healthy air quality and the impact it can have on your homes, schools, and office spaces.
Proper ventilation and clean AC vents and ducts will keep the air fresh and pure indoors.
Like your lungs, your home also needs to be able to breathe to make sure that there is always fresh air coming in and dirty air going out. The air indoors can build up high levels of moisture, odors, gases, dust, and other air pollutants, and various bacteria that can be harmful. To keep the air safe indoors, fresh outdoor air is needed to dilute these indoor pollutants and circulate in your home.
To provide good air quality, enough air needs to be brought in and circulated so that it enters all areas of the home. For almost all homes, windows and structural elements contribute to bringing in the fresh air. Many homes have additional mechanical systems to add to the flow and even your AC can help to bring in fresh cool air. Some sources, such as stoves and bathrooms, need special venting that can remove the pollution they produce even keeping your AC ducts clean is highly crucial.
Ventilation helps reduce indoor air pollution, but it works best if paired with keeping known sources of air pollution out of the building. For example, the only way to reduce the effect of second-hand smoke indoors is to not allow smoking indoors or near open spaces. This smoke can get accumulated in your AC ducts which can cause issues in your AC leaving it harmed and not fulfilling its potential.
Outdoor air can bring pollution indoors as well, so ensure that you take steps to reduce outdoor air pollution as it is important.
- When not enough air circulates, pollution builds up indoors and this pollution can get accumulated on your machines. Sometimes efforts to make buildings more energy-efficient can backfire by not allowing enough air to move, building up too much pollution which can be harmful to your health.
- Carbon monoxide can build up to deadly levels indoors without proper ventilation and this needs to take care of immediately, but it is not the only risk.
- Concentrations of radon, which can cause lung cancer, can increase in homes with low ventilation and pollutants being stuck in your AC ducts.
- High humidity outside can make indoor air more humid, increasing the risk of moisture damage indoors, such as mold growth or wood rot which can reduce the efficiency of your Air Conditioner.
Always be careful what you put inside your body as it reflects on the outside. Breathing fresh pure air can make you glow and give you multiple health benefits. In Dubai with the constant heatwaves, you would prefer staying indoor with your AC on blast but make sure your AC is maintained and sanitized by our skilled professionals at Moltocare.
The bigger picture:
Collectively tons of CO2 is released into the Earth’s atmosphere annually (that’s a whole lot!) thanks to the tremendous energy utilized to successfully run air conditioning units. But we promise there’s a silver lining and here it is; over the past decade, manufacturers have remained laser-focused on using substances like natural gas in the process thereby reducing the mercury emissions from electric units to help stabilize the particles in the air.
Much like that, an air conditioning unit within your home, school or otherwise, emits moisture and condensation in the process which may produce microorganisms within the system as explained below:
- Debris: Fragments and particles released through the unit will clog your airflow and eventually tamper with the performance of the air filter
- Air pressure: In the case of air leakage within the house (or the unit. Remember – regular AC service and AC maintenance is important!), the unit would work twice as hard to cool the space. That’s negative air pressure
- Humidity: (And we’re blessed with it here in the warmer months) Maintain moisture levels within the house so the house remains cool without making the unit work that much harder
Luckily, at Moltocare, we care about I(A)Q – your indoor air quality! Here are a few tips to get your IAQ at optimum levels:
- Wrap it up: Bearing in mind the previously mentioned air leakage around the house, make sure the house is well sealed while the air conditioner cools the space
- Dehumidify: Extra moisture, extra humidity in the air contributes to the lack of efficiency by your unit. Install a dehumidifier so your IAQ can be maintained at a recommended 30%-50%
- Clean the filter: Clean or replace your air filter to ensure proper airflow through the room and provide the safest breathing air possible. AC vent cleaning and duct cleaning is crucial to ensure consistent and healthy airflow through space
- Don’t let it drip: Air conditioning units have a drip pan that stores water released by the unit during its performance. It’s important to clean out the drip pan to avoid mold building up or excess water that could cause leakage
These doable, simple tips are easily implementable and some do spruce up space! Dehumidifiers, houseplants, clean floors are just the beginning to help beautify the space as well as allow healthy air quality for your loved ones. Local home décor brands are offering discounts this Ramadan on houseplants and decorative humidifier pieces – dual purpose, we think!
