Help! My AC is Leaking – What Do I Do?

If your AC is leaking, here’s what could be the problem and how you can fix it!

It’s a humid day and your room feels kind of stuffy, making it uncomfortable and unbearable for you after a point. You decide to switch on the AC and have it cool the room for a while. Barely a minute or two has passed since you switched it on when you notice a thin trail of water trickling down from one corner of the main unit. Seems like your AC is leaking!

Reasons Why Your AC is Leaking

●Improper installation:

Your recently installed AC is leaking? That means it was not installed properly. Since the AC and the drainage pipes are not proportional, it will disrupt the water-flow. Rather than making its way out of the drainage pan, this water may be flowing backwards or staying still. For the water to drain out, the pipe has to be placed lower than the main unit.

●Clogged drain pipe:

Dirt and debris can obstruct water from flowing out of the drainage pipe. If the water cannot flow outwards, it will make its way back to the main air conditioning unit where it will overflow and make the AC leak.

●Dirt in the air filter:

If it’s not the drainage pipe then there must be something in the air filter. The air flowing inside the air conditioning unit contains dust, pollen and allergens which get accumulated on the air filter. This can block the airflow over the evaporator coils and their temperature will drop to freezing point. Instead of moisture, ice will slowly start forming over the coils which will eventually melt and start dripping excessively into the drainage pan eventually making the AC leak.

●Poor refrigerant level:

If the refrigerant levels are low, the air conditioning pressure will fall. This will have the evaporator coils reach freezing point and the ice formed will eventually drain as excessive water and leak from the main unit.

Here’s What You Should Do

●If it’s a matter of improper installation, call for a technician and have the AC reinstalled.

●Clean the clogged drain pipe with a pump that will suck out all the guck. This will remove anything that may be blocking the water to flow out of the drainage pipe.

●The air filter should carefully be taken out once every 30-45 days to be cleaned and dried.

●Ensure that there are enough refrigerants in the main air conditioning unit.
